Dynamiq Yachts Melges 20 Monaco Winter Series: the winner or loser of the season is not determined yet

We didn’t notice that it has already been a month since the Act 2 of the Dynamiq Yachts Melges 20 Monaco Winter Series, and now true fans of Melges 20 gathered in Monaco for the third time.

This year the tradition of naming third stage of the Series, the Beluga Cup, was not broken. It is one of the most favorite and important regattas of the season. There are at least three reasons for that. Firstly the second half of the season has started, which means the time for ‘training’ has passed and everyone needs to concentrate and ‘roll up their sleeves’ to get the best results in spring. Secondly, the Christmas and New Years spirit is in Monaco, which cheers everyone up and lightens the mood. Last but not least, this mood is supported by our favorite and famous Beluga Party!

We can say that the motto of the upcoming regatta is “Let’s race and have fun”.

So who will be living this motto on the regatta? There are 18 teams in the preliminary application. Ten of them are sailing under Russian flag, others are from the USA, Italy, France, Sweden, Poland, and 2 of those teams have Russian sailors on board, but sailing under Monaco flag.

The results, with which Melges 20 fleet approaches the Act 3, are as followed.

Alexander Ezhkov’s PIRogovo is in the lead. Last season this team established themselves as one of the leading teams, and this season they proved to be exactly that. The victory of the starting regatta with perfect sum of points and the 4th place in the Act 2 gives this team of Moscow yacht-club an impressive summary of 21 point. It’s hard to imagine that PIRogovo will weaken their vim. Everyone will be trying to win the Beluga Cup from that team.

Their main competitor for now, after two regattas, is Alexander Novoselov’s Victor. He is a new helmsman in Melges 20, but his results of season 2016/2017 speak for himself: he has 2nd and 3rd place in regattas, and we can see how serious he is about winning and how fast he adjusted to extremely competitive fleet. Now Victor has 29 points.

Third position in overall rankings of the season so far, with a deficit of 19 points, has Valentin Zavadnikov’s Synergy. This team snatched their victory during the last race of the Act 2 of the Dynamiq Yachts Melges 20 Monaco Winter Series.

Alexander Mikhaylik’s Alex Team is behind Synergy by 10 points in the overall rankings; Vadim Yakhinson’s Leviathan is 11 points behind, Vladimir Prosikhin’s Nika is by 14, Leonid Altukhov’s PIRogovo Evolution is by 25 points and Pavel Grachev’s RUS184.

Oleg Evdokimenko’s Kotyara is placed 13th. For now they are lagging behind the leaders of the fleet a lot, but they missed the first regatta of the season. During Act 2 Kotyara was leading until the last race, in which sadly they were placed 16th, which led to 5th position in the overall rankings of the Act 2. However, if Evdokimenko races throughout the remaining tree regattas on the same level, Kotyara will be among leaders of the fleet in the end for sure. Same goes for Mag Tiny of Krzysztof Krempec, he also missed the Act 1.

The overall results of the Dynamiq Yachts Melges 20 Monaco Winter Series are quite tensed now, there are three more regattas ahead and there are no distinguished winners or losers yet.

The battle for prizes will start on December 9th on Beluga Cup. The most interesting part is ahead of us now!
