Italian team STIG, helmed by Alessandro Rombelli, are without doubt one of the main contenders for the championship in the Melges 20 World Championship, which starts on the 25th of August.
Apparently, this team is named after the very famous character from Top Gear, the mysterious super racer who cannot be defeated. The sailing STIG cannot boast of such an achievement, but they are obviously trying to reach those heights.
In the Summer Series of this season STIG won the regattas in Porto Ercole and the Garda Lake, came 2nd in Talamone and 4th in Porto Venere. However, even these impressive results did not allow it to win the season. Because of the specific way of counting the points, STIG was placed in the general ranking on the 4th place. On the other hand, in the World Ranking of Melges 20 they are the 1st!
They had a good practice before the main regatta of the season during the Open Russian Championship. Team STIG was struggling for some time but in the last day they rose up to the podium. Apparently, the first days of racing were needed to adjust to the new team member. For the World Championship Paul Goodison is joining Alessandro Rombelli, Francesco Masotto and Giorgio Tortarolo. He is the Olympic Champion of Beijing 2008 in the Laser class, current world champion of the Moth class, member of team Artemis in America’s Cup. This Member of the Order of the British Empire will surely strengthen team STIG.
And we are going to look after them!
